What about the Death Penalty?
by:Aimee Fowler, Ashley Chaffin, Brandi Harrelson
Many people see the death penalty as a controversial topic because of so many different opinions. Some of these opinions make a lot of sense and let one see the other side of the story, and really make one think! Doing this article has helped many people understand the difference in how the death penalty could help America or how it could be a disadvantage. We have a few opinions we would like to state. And, several students and faculty have good opinions on the subject also.
“Before we did this article, I was completely against the death penalty. However, after seeing what so many people had to say, I understand that sometimes the death penalty does make sense. People in the world are cruel, but second chances are given. However, if a criminal repeats an offense, it’s wrong! I also think that if an innocent person is given the death penalty, that’s killing also! I understand people are for the death penalty, and I understand why, but mistakes are made, and everyone deserves a second chance.People need to have very distinct evidence before sentencing someone to death! If paying taxes for someone to spend life in jail means not killing him/her, I’m all for it!”
-Aimee Fowler-
“I believe the death penalty, under certain circumstances, is a decent verdict. No, I don’t believe the death penalty should be taken lightly; however, I think that a person needs to commit a series of horrible crimes before being put to death, but sometimes even jail time can’t fix a person. There are a lot of sick people in our happy little world. Some minds can’t be fixed, and some crimes can’t be forgiven. If one has done something terrible enough to get put in jail for longer than life, then what’s the point in wasting tax payer’s dollars to feed, clothe, and provide shelter for that convict? You can’t just throw the death penalty around, but like I said, under some circumstances, it’s the right thing to do.”
-Ashley Chaffin-
“I think that the death penalty should be allowed in certain cases. Take for example, if a man has molested children or raped someone or murdered someone, it should be enforced. But then again, what good does it really do to that person if he is psycho anyway? He would probably enjoy dying because it’s an escape for him. I say we should make these criminals serve their time until they die, and/or we should make them go through what they did to the person who they hurt. I also think that whenever God takes care of them, it’s going to be ten times worse than what we could ever do to them.”
-Brandi Harrelson-
Several students here had AMAZING opinions on the death penalty; it’s amazing how children today do actually pay attention and listen to the news about the world around us! Some are completely against it, and there are people for it, but let’s get their exact words!
“I’m against [the death peanalty] because I think that if it is a crime that is worth the death penalty, they should get more than one sentence of life in prison. Killing is their perfect way out of punishment.”
-Ryan Caulder-
“Against, because two wrongs don’t make a right.”
-Manish Gaskins-
“Against, because imagine if somebody killed your own family, and you wanted to kill them back, you die anyway.”
-Joey Mehl-
“More people in jail, more taxes.”
-Brittany Grey-
“For it, because people who kill should be killed under certain circumstances such as killing more than once, rape, child molesters, etc., but self defense is not worth the death penalty.”
-TJ Mark-
“I support the death penalty because there needs to be a strong enough penalty to stop people from committing crimes.”
-Senor Parker-
“I’m against the death penalty. If we put one innocent person to death, that’s one too many.”
-Mr. Mendez-
“I’m against the death penalty because I really don’t think a person should die like that, but on the other hand, it gives a person time to think and get to know the Lord.”
-Mrs. Rudene Gore-
“It depends on the circumstances. I think it’s unfair to pay taxes for them to sit in jail, but if they do a serious crime more than once, they already got their chance.”
-Brett Cooksey-
“It depends if it’s something they’ve done to a young child. If that’s the case, then yes, but I can’t say that they should die for everything.”
-Mrs. Livingston-
We’d like to take a moment to thank each person for sharing his opinion. The death penalty is a touchy subject, and it’s not something that all people enjoy talking about. More than once we were asked to come back another time for a different subject. Many stated that it was too controversial of a subject; others just declined to give us an answer. Once again, we would like to take the time to thank all of the brave people who gave us an answer. You helped us in our quest for knowledge. Your opinions are greatly appreciated!
