Prom is finally here, only five days away! But before you go get in the car, or take a sip of any drink, listen to this. It is estimate that 3 out of every 5 teens who attend prom will drink alcohol sometime afterwards. Please help lower this statistic and be smart during your spring break. Make smart decisions and be careful, because even if you are not drinking make sure you do not get in a vehicle with anyone who does. Prom can be as fun as you make it, dont ruin your spring break by visiting the hospital or jail! Stay out of trouble and be safe! And dance the night away!

Ground Hog Day is on Tuesday February 2, this year. The only two countries that celebrate Ground Hog Day are the U.S and Canada. Everyone knows the folktale, if a groundhog emerges form its burrow on the 2nd of February and sees its shadow the groundhog will retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. Only do you know It comes from German roots. Groundhogs day is based on a belief that on this day (February 2) the groundhog, or woodchuck, comes out of hole after winter hibernation to look for its shadow. If the shadow is seen, it’s a sunny day. And the groundhog foretells ’six more weeks of bad weather’ and thus a lingering winter. But spring is coming if no shadow is seen because of clouds. The groundhog then behaves accordingly. It goes back into the hole if the weather turns bad, but stays above ground if spring is near. The Groundhog Day came into being in North America during the late 1800s. Thanks to the combined effort of Clymer H. Freas, a newspaper editor, and W. Smith, an American Congressman and newspaper publisher. The Groundhog Day is also very popular in Canada and Wiarton Willy is the Groundhog that is used to predict the length of winter over there.

The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout every year on the third Thursday in November. This year the Great American Smokeout will take place on November 19, 2009. The purpose of the event is to set aside a day to help smokers quit smoking, and to quit using tobacco products, for at least one day, with the hope that they will quit completely. To show your support, students can pay $3 to wear hats and teachers pay $5 to wear jeans on Thurdsay, November 19. All proceeds will go to Ms. Debi James’ Pisgah for Hammering Out Cancer Team for the American Cancer Society. Starting on Monday, you can pay your donations to Ms. Myers, Ms. Altman, Ms. Gasque and Ms. Johnson, the school nurse. You will then revieve a sticker on Thursday to wear your hats or jeans. This project is sponsored by the FCCLA
